Keeping active :working from home

Training/Activity ideas for working at home Unless you are able to leave home you are probably much less active than you are usually. In an average day at work you walk there and back go out for a walk at lunchtime. You may change rooms/buildings as well as any sports or activities. Non of this happens during home working. It is very easy to spend your whole time sitting and forget to do other things. If you include some activity in your plans it will help your concentration as well as keeping your energy levels high it will lift your mood.  To prevent yourself being overcome with worry, it is important to structure your time so life still has a routine. Why not write some lists of things you might try: books to read,  box sets to watch,  exercise you like to do,  Games to play Recipes to try New skills friends who you don’t normally have time to talk to                          ...

A Few Weeks Later : Life in Lockdown

A Few Weeks Later : Life in Lockdown Temporary Closure  What a strange time this is for everyone. It is over three weeks since Glynis made the difficult decision to temporarily close our doors and we have all been adjusting to our new lives in lockdown ever since.  Although we aren’t in the clinic, we remain in touch with each other via email and WhatsApp.  Appointments  We are still able to offer telephone consultations, or video consultations. These have been popular especially the short 15 minute calls which we are offering free of charge. You can book both of these appointments online or by giving the practice a call.   How things have been  I think we have all been feeling rather bombarded with bad news, and whilst we don’t want to make light of this horrible virus, especially given so many people are suffering in so many ways, we have been trying to focus on the positives.  Here are Jane’s observations from her third w...

Does running a mile a day really improve children’s lives? The Scottish school that asked primary pupils to do 15 minutes of exercise every day The Scottish school that asked primary pupils to do 15 minutes of exercise every day started a global trend – and research suggests it really is transforming lives. It was an 80-year-old volunteer who prompted Elaine Wylie, the then headteacher of St Ninians primary school in Stirling, to reappraise the fitness of the children in her school. “Your children are not fit,” the volunteer told her. Wylie was stung by the comment, even though she suspected it was true. The PE teacher confirmed it. Not just for children   Originally aimed at school children, but now the Daily Mile Foundation have tweaked it for adults too - more info can be found in the link below. In short, the study found that children taking part in the daily mile, which is fifteen minutes of jogging per day, became faster, increased their moderate to vigorou...

Walking with children

Walking with children   Give yourself permission to play (and exercise more ) As we get older we stop playing ,it's a sad truth many of us forget the joy of running along just for the joy of it not because we want to get something done in a hurry.Remember how you loved playing ?Rolling down a hill well just because you can? Here are a few suggestions to get you and your children moving playing and having fun together. When walking together  pretend you are walking like animals. Take turns and each of you suggest an animal, then you all walk like you think this creature would walk. Unless of course the animal goes very quickly and which case be prepared to run. My favourite is a chimpanzee lots of opportunity to be silly and act out chimp like grooming if children or other grown ups don't join in or you can catch them. All animals work well but tigers, squirels, frogs, cats and dogs are a few to get you started. With young children it is a great way to ...
